Obituary

Mary Constance “Connie” Carman Sekerak Hicks passed away peacefully June 5, 2018. She was born March 15, 1927, in Erie, PA to Nevin Minnich Carman and Edla Marie Kempe. Connie lived in Meadville, PA from 1931-1937. When her father remarried after Edla's death (1933), Connie gained stepmother Nellie Roberts Ellison and step-siblings John and Jane.

Connie attended Allegheny College and Flora Stone Mather College (B.A. English ’48), and Francis Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Cleveland, OH (M.N.’51). She tied for first place Ohio State Nursing Board exams in 1952.

While at nursing school, she met WWII veteran Dr. Nicholas “Nick” Michael Sekerak (Oberlin College, B.S. ‘41, USN LTJG, and CWRU, M.D. ’51). They married in August 1949 and had seven children.

Connie was a pioneer in breast-feeding and natural childbirth and taught childbirth classes in the ‘50s and ‘60s. She was one of the first Ohioans to incorporate the Lamaze childbirth method into her classes. Connie and Nick successfully advocated for the right of fathers to be in delivery rooms in Cleveland area hospitals.

Connie earned her M.S.N. at Case Western Reserve University ('77). She was a nurse counselor at Bellfaire JCB, staff educator at Cleveland Psychiatric Institute, and graduate instructor at Case Western Reserve School of Nursing.

Connie married Ernest L. Hicks (deceased 2000) May 22, 1998. She became a resident of McGregor Home (2005-2018) and led poetry classes there. She was a parishioner and choir member at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.

Connie was the loving mother of Christopher (Marion), Jennifer Stanko (John), Elizabeth Conroy (Michael), Kathryn, Joseph, Robin (Dave Fogarty), and Carrie. Loving grandmother of Erin, Jonathan, Jeff, Jim, Michelle, Christie, Mary, Laura (deceased 2016), Brynne, Justin, Melissa, Nathaniel, and Avery. Loving great-grandmother of Hazel and Logan.

Memorial is Saturday, June 16, 2 p.m., Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 3031 Monticello Blvd., 44118. In lieu of flowers, Connie asked that donations be sent to: The Southern Poverty Law Center and The American Civil Liberties Union.
