It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Michael Grafton Weaver, who passed away on April 22 at his home in South Russell, Ohio.
To those who knew him, Mike was many things, but above all else he was a husband and a father—a source of strength, laughter, and deep and unconditional love to his wife, Ellen, and to his children, Andrew and Carolyn. As a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a dedicated doctor, a loyal friend—to each person who crossed his path, no matter how brief the encounter—Mike showed respect, patience, and compassion in equal measure. He was a man who lived by his convictions, kept his promises, and navigated his life according to the needs of the ones he loved.
One of Mike’s greatest talents, adored by those he cared for, was his instinct for conjuring adventure from the ordinary circumstances of life. The world, for Mike, was a treasure hunt, and he expressed his affection for family and friends by filling their lives with games and maps and walks in the woods—a spirit of joy and play, his own particular form of magic. He was a lifelong worshipper of the outdoors, a passionate hiker, and a conscientious defender of our National Parks. In his characteristic style, genuine and clever, he passed away on Earth Day. He died peacefully in the afternoon with the sun shining and his family at his side.
On Sunday, July 1, a celebration in Mike’s memory will be held at the Frohring Meadows pavilion in South Russell from 4 to 8 p.m. The open house event will include food, games, walks around the park’s nature trails, and a campfire under the stars. Rain or shine, please bring a lawn chair or a blanket.
Donations in Mike’s honor can be made to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation and The Wilderness Society.
