ROBERT J. TOMSICH, age 87. Beloved husband of 59 years to Suzanne (nee Kirkhart); dearest father of Joan Tomsich, Carol Fountain (husband John) and John Tomsich (wife Michelle); loving grandfather of Christopher and Matthew Heaney, Caroline and Blake Fountain, Kaylee, Lukas, Jada and Jacob Tomsich; dear brother of the late Frances Selers.
As a philanthropist and business leader, Robert Tomsich always placed a high value on the principles of hard work, commitment and perseverance.
Soon after graduating from Cleveland State University in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he formed a small company offering engineering services, growing it into a company providing skilled engineering services to many Fortune 500 companies across the country. He expanded the scope of the business further and added specialized manufacturing, marketing and service firms turning the enterprise into a multinational company with facilities throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and South Africa. He remained active and involved as the Chairman and CEO of Nesco, Inc. leading thousands of dedicated employees.
Robert matched his business accomplishments with his generosity and strong devotion to philanthropy with particular attention to the performing arts, civic causes and efforts on behalf of underprivileged children. He has supported an array of non-profit causes and served as a Trustee and on several Boards including Kenyon College, Cleveland State University, Mount Union College, Playhouse Square, and the Cleveland Clinic to name a few. As a valued Trustee of the Cleveland Clinic, his skills and insights helped to drive its fundraising and direction. He endowed numerous Clinic chairs and funded the areas of Cardiology, Pathology, Cancer, Vascular and Digestive research.
In recognition of his achievements as well as his community activism, he received honorary doctorate degrees from Kenyon College and Cleveland State University and was awarded the Lifetime Distinguished Fellows Award from the Cleveland Clinic, an Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the Order of Freedom Award from the president of the Republic of Slovenia.
Robert always put family first, as a husband, father and grandfather. Robert was cherished by his friends and family and will be missed by all who knew him.
