Obituary

Joan Cormier Matilo passed away peacefully January 3, 2019 after spending two wonderful days over the holidays with her entire family.

It was on a blind date while a student at The Andrews School for Girls that she met the love of her life, George E. Matilo. They celebrated 74 years of marriage until his death in 2015.

Joan was the proud and loving mother of three daughters, Janet Goudie (the late William), Mary Lou Baker (the late Richard), Susan Stratton (Steven) and grandmother to eight beautiful grandchildren and their spouses, plus 18 great grandchildren ranging in ages nine months to 25 years.

Over the years Joan was involved in volunteer groups. She went through Red Cross training and after completion volunteered at Huron Road Hospital for many years. She then volunteered at Hillcrest Hospital for 32 years until the age of 90. She and George spent many hours volunteering with the General Electric Elfun group throughout the Greater Cleveland area and around the country.

Joan had many creative talents which were passed along to her daughters and these talents continue in each of her grandchildren and remain a legacy to her. She entertained graciously on many occasions.

The family loved getting together. These occasions happened often and were very special to Joan and to the entire family.

She loved her family dearly! She had a beautiful life. She will be missed but long remembered.

A celebration of Joan’s life will take place at Garfield Memorial Church, 3650 Lander Rd., Pepper Pike at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019 with time to visit with the family following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joan Cormier Matilo to Andrews Osborne Academy Development Office, 38588 Mentor Ave., Willoughby, Ohio 44094, Att: Stephen Langel, Director of Development or Hospice of the Western Reserve, P.O. Box 72101, Cleveland, Ohio 44192.
