HELMUT “HAL” SCHREIBER M.D., age 75. Beloved husband of 51 years to Helen (nee Kusznier); dear father of Katrina S. Firlik M.D. (Andrew) of Los Angeles, Ingrid of Oxford, OH, Richard (Farm) of Westerville, OH and Elizabeth Schreiber (John Kulbis); cherished grandfather of Alison and Owen Pennington and Annika Firlik; fond brother of the late Otto Schreiber; loving brother-in-law to the Kusznier family. Hal was the Director, Department of Surgery, St. Vincent Charity Hospital/St. Luke’s Medical Center, 1999-2007. He was Medical Director and Founder of the Cleveland Center for Bariatric Surgery, St. Vincent Charity Hospital/St. Luke’s Medical Center, 1997-2007 and was a leader and innovator in bariatric surgery. Hal was Director, Department of Surgery, St. Luke’s Medical Center, 1988-1999 and Director of the Surgical Residency Program; Chairman, Department of Surgery, Meridia Huron Hospital, 1981-1988 and was on the clinical faculty at CWRU School of Medicine, 1970-2011, from teaching fellow to associate clinical professor. Hal was the author of over 51 papers and chapters in the medical literature. He was inducted into Cleveland Magazine’s 2002 Medical Hall of Fame for Pioneering in Bariatric Surgery in the city of Cleveland; and received Special U.S. Congressional Recognition for Service to the Community, presented by The Hon. Dennis Kucinich, among many other professional awards. Hal was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an enthusiastic participant in his favorite hobbies: fly fishing, painting, spending time in the Florida Keys with family, and affinity for native European culture and food. Hal had a great appreciation for and dedication to the medical team he worked with. He was often called upon to deal with particularly difficult surgical cases due to his great skill, experience, and keen judgment. He was a gentle soul, always looking to help fix a problem. The family will receive friends SATURDAY, JULY 7, 2018 FROM 10 A.M. TO 12 NOON AT THE SCHULTE & MAHON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 5252 MAYFIELD RD., LYNDHURST (BETWEEN RICHMOND AND BRAINARD) with Funeral Service at 12:00 Noon. Interment Private, Riverside Cemetery.
