HELEN M. PORTER, age 86, passed away on December 17, 2017.
Helen Marie Porter (nee Adams) was the loving spouse of James M. Porter (honorable judge, deceased) for 65 years. Dear mother of James E. (Heidi), Thomas W. (Anne), William M. (Marie), and Daniel J. (Molly). Dear mother-in-law of Gail McKenna Porter. Loving grandmother of thirteen: Jaime Porter (Nick Gottlieb), Kathleen, Thomas, Sean, Devin (Kathleen), Clare Park (Hyeuo), Keith, Jacqueline, Nicole, Michelle, Danielle, Annabel, and Emaline. Loving great-grandmother of three: Brennan, Sullivan, and Hae-Jin. Dear sister of William Adams (Joan, deceased). Dear sister-in-law of Thomas (deceased) (Laurin), John (deceased) (Loretta, deceased), Robert (Mary Clare), and Gerald (Miriam).
Helen grew up in East Cleveland and attended Christ the King Grade School and Beaumont School (1949). Her parents were William W. Adams and Helen Adams (nee Mackin). A graduate of St. John’s College (1952), Helen began her career as an elementary teacher in the Cleveland Public Schools. She married Jim in 1952, accompanying him to Virginia (where he was stationed in the Army) and to the University of Michigan Law School, before returning to settle in Cleveland permanently in 1957. Helen left teaching to become a full-time homemaker, raising her four boys and supporting her husband’s career as a trial lawyer and then later as a judge on the Ohio Court of Appeals, for which she helped manage his election campaigns.
Helen was a devoted alumna of Beaumont and St. John’s, and a lifelong contributor to the Carmelite Sisters. She loved to play golf, especially with her husband and sons. Helen will most be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, and later grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, and grandmother-in-law, who enjoyed nothing more than hosting family gatherings and being together with her family. She deeply loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, keenly following their lives, development, and careers, and providing loving support and candid advice whenever it was needed. The health and welfare of her family was her life’s mission.
The family would appreciate contributions in memory of Helen to Beaumont School, 3301 North Park Boulevard, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118, or to the Carmelite Sisters, 3176 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118.
