Obituary

EMMA SKOFF LINCOLN, age 95, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017. Emma is survived by her six children and their spouses: Cathy of Shaker Hts., David (Carolyn) of Moreland Hills, Barbara (Tim Murphy) of Redwood City, CA, Paul (Kathy Toderick) of Mentor, Scott (Kathy) of Salem, SC, Greg (Donna) of Beachwood and daughter-in-law, Richelle of Highland Hts. Eight grandchildren also survive her: Andrew, Taylor, Theodore, Candace, Christopher, Annabelle, Richard “Woody”, and Joseph. Emma led an extraordinary life. The only child of immigrant parents, she spoke eight languages including Arabic. After graduating in three years from Flora Stone Mather (CWRU) Summa Cum Laude, she became a Spanish translator. Within three years, Emma decided to study law, with a full scholarship she finished the three-year program in two years. She was one of only three women to graduate in 1949 from the Thomas Bacchus School of Law (CWRU). She opened up her own law firm and became an Assistant Attorney General for Ohio in the early 1950s. In 1955, Emma wed James F. Lincoln Jr. and started her family. A passionate photographer, she captured her family life in great detail both in photographs and movies. Music was another great interest. Emma was an opera singer and played piano. She encouraged the study of music by volunteering at The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Institute of Music. She was the treasurer on most of the volunteer boards for The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music, The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, Music School Settlement, Cleveland Museum of Health, The Women’s City Club of Cleveland and many others. Her philanthropy helped fund the textile conservation lab at the Cleveland Art Museum, anthropology studies at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Cleveland Orchestra, The Children’s Museum and the young artist programs at The Metropolitan Opera. She created a scholarship in her name for female law students attending CWRU. Because the Lincoln family were avid boaters, they joined Mentor Harbor Yachting Club in 1969. Emma was an active member and proud supporter of the Slovenian National Home. In 1989, she became a director of the Lincoln Electric Co. and later Director Emeritus. She was a certified welder. Emma was a devoted collector of nativity scenes, having amassed a collection of over 800. Over 15 years ago, a book entitled “Nativity Creches of the World” was written and published about her collection, with proceeds benefitting Ursuline College. Emma traveled the world and spent her birthdays on all seven continents. She visited over 250 countries and territories, carrying her camera equipment, capturing her journeys to share with her family. While waiting for planes, she needlepointed dozens of pillows and gifts. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Cleveland Institute of Music and The Cleveland Orchestra. Funeral Mass Monday, December 18, 2017 at Gesu Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment Lake View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the SCHULTE & MAHON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 5252 MAYFIELD RD., LYNDHURST (BETWEEN RICHMOND AND BRAINARD) SUNDAY, DECEMBER 17 FROM 1 TO 5 P.M.
