ROBERT D. SHEA, age 93, died Saturday, June 24, 2017 in Ocala, Florida, surrounded by family.
Robert was married 55 years to his beloved wife, Roxanne (nee Roski) and is survived by his four children, Bob (Micki), John (Heather), Mary Martinez (Ernie), and Thomas P.; his brother, Tom (Darylene); four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
Born in Cleveland, son of Marguerite (nee Mitchell) and Patrick C. Shea, he was a longtime resident of Gates Mills. Robert was preceded in death by his brothers Patrick C. and William M.
Bob served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII. He graduated Ohio University in 1948 where he also served as a Flight Instructor. Subsequently he was a Flight Instructor in the Air Force Reserve and opened the Cuyahoga County Airport in 1949 where he served as Airport Manager for 42 years. Other contributions and recognition to aviation included: recipient of the Air Force Association Aero Space Award in 1963; President of the Ohio Airport Managers Association from 1976 through 1977; President of the Cleveland National Air Show from 1983 through 1987; Vice-President of the Air Show Foundation; Member of the Advisory Committee at Ohio University-Aviation Department; Executive member of the American Association of Airport Executives; 1990 Recipient of the American Association of Airport Managers Distinguished Service Award; and beloved member of the Quite Birdmen (“QB”) for 40 years.
On October 13, 1991, after 42 years of dedicated service and in tribute, the Board of Cuyahoga County Commissioners dedicated the airfield of Cuyahoga County Airport as ROBERT D. SHEA FIELD.
Following the passing of his wife in 2009, Robert joined members of his family in Florida.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Bob’s life will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 6850 Mayfield Rd., Gates Mills, OH on August 14, 2017 at 11:30 a.m., followed by interment at Gates Mills Cemetery (North).
