REV. JAMES E. VON TOBEL, SJ, died at Munson Hospital, Traverse City, MI, on September 23. He was 80 years old. Fr. Von Tobel was born on March 31, 1936. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1954. After following the regular Jesuit course of studies, he was ordained priest in 1967 and professed his final vows as a Jesuit in 1973. He was serving as pastor at the Church of the Gesu, University Heights, at the time of his death. Fr. Von Tobel's gifts were multiple, and he was regularly called on to put them to use for the benefit of the Society of Jesus and the Church. He served in provincial administration for the Jesuits, including stints as the socius (chief of staff) to the provincial, assistant to the director of novices, vocation director, formation director, and development director. He served in high school administration at St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, in the early 1970s. His real love was pastoral work. In addition to his most recent service at Gesu (where he had earlier served as pastor from 2000-2006), he also assisted in the Dioceses of Winona, WI, and Gaylord, MI, where he was sent by local bishops to administer parishes on an interim basis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, September 28, at 7:00 p.m. at Gesu Catholic Church, University Heights. Visitation will be on the same day in the Church from 2:00-5:00 p.m. . Memorial Mass Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 11:15 a.m. followed by committal at Colombiere Center, Clarkston, MI.
