DONALD DALE SMITH, 88, passed away July 3, 2017. Beloved husband for 65 years of the late Edna Mae (Jackson). Loving father of Allen (MaryJo), Donna Zuro (David), Dennis (Kay), Daniel (Ellen), and Deanna Baker (Ken). Brother of Jack (Ruth) and the late Charles (Thelma). Preceded in death by his parents, Draper and Ada. Beloved grandfather to Damon (Jesse), Morgan (Adrienne), Brian Zuro (Sarah), Heather Heller (David), Amy Thornton (Josh), Devin (deceased), Tara Carlson (Jason), Rory, Emma, Hannah, Martha, Leah, Matthew Baker (Elizabeth), Brittany Scott (Matthew), Chelsea Baker and Abbey Arnold (Stephen). Great-grandfather of 16. Dear friend to Helen Meditz. Don grew up in Cambridge, Ohio, graduated from Garfield Heights High School, served in the U.S. Army, was a proud graduate of Western Reserve University and Cleveland Marshall School of Law. He was a tax attorney for Republic Steel Corp., had a private law practice for many years, was an entrepreneur establishing many companies, and served on many corporate boards including Midwest Bank & Trust, Liberty Bank and the Bank of Marco Island, where he was a founding director. Don developed many properties in Northeast Ohio and Marco Island, FL, and was an owner-operator of 15 McDonalds restaurants. Don was a leader in service to the City of Euclid where he served on the school board for 11 years, was acting judge in the Euclid Municipal Court for a number of years, was one of the founders of the Euclid Development Corp. and served on the boards of Euclid General Hospital and Meridia Health System. He was most proud to be counted as a founding member and trustee for many years of the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland. Don was a member of the Euclid Rotary Club, an Elder at Beachland and Boulevard Presbyterian Churches and a member of the Church of the Western Reserve, the Euclid Veterans’ Club, was a 32nd Degree Mason and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 14, Acacia Country Club, and was a charter member of the Marco Island Country Club. Don enjoyed tennis well into his 80s, golf, fishing, reading, traveling to all seven continents and spending time with his family most of all. Don’s lifelong motto was “Don’t quit”, to which he forever adhered. Donations in Don’s memory may be sent to the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland, 10415 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.
